This ancient 8th century hymn text was translated into English in 1905 by Mary E. Byrne (1880-1931), a research worker and writer for the Board of Intermediate Education in Dublin, Ireland.

Anglican minister, George Croly wrote the text for the Pentecost Season. It first appeared in 1854 in Croly’s own hymnal, Psalms and Hymns for Public Worship, and was originally titled “Holiness Desired”.
