Lyrics as Poetry

MARRIAGE VERSION

Holy One, O Holy One,
your tender love creatively
has called to be all that has life.
Holy One.

Holy One, O Holy One,
with gentle love these two would pledge
their faithfulness for all their days.
Holy One.

Holy One, O Holy One,
we cannot know the nature of
the days ahead, the pains and joys.
Holy One.

Holy One, O Holy One,
we pray that these secure in faith
and strong in love might know your peace.
Holy One.

Holy One, O Holy One,
while life is ours we’d blessing take,
we’d blessing give so offer praise.
Holy One.

BY WALTER FARQUHARSON

Presiding at the marriage of a couple has always been something I have seen as a privilege.

Most who came to be married in a church, or within a service presided over by a person designated to offer both God’s blessing and the blessing of the sponsoring faith community, sincerely recognized that what they were doing had great importance. This was an intimate yet public proclamation of their love for each other. It was a time of speaking truth and of speaking from the heart. It was an offering of all each had to offer, a pledge of faithfulness, and a promise to allow their love for each other to grow and to deepen with the passage of time, in and through times of great joy and times of testing and even sadness and loss. All of this done, all of this spoken, despite the knowledge that marriages can fail and relationships can sour.

So there is within the marriage an acknowledgement of vulnerability and of the fragility and ambiguity of human love as well as a celebration of the amazing strength and flexibility of love that nurtures and frees.

The marking of a marriage is, for many in family and among friends, an opportunity to reflect on the values that govern choices and actions within relationships. What is it that we truly wish for this couple we have loved?

The faith and gathered community too is reminded that it has a commitment to make – that it will honour this couple and their relationship – that it will support them – be there, in whatever ways possible, to celebrate good times and to walk courageously through tough times.

What is our prayer – for ourselves – for others?

Think of the couple whose marriage you next celebrate. You may sing your prayer that they will be held in the palm of God’s hands or borne up on eagle’s wings, but what, as agents of God’s love and care, will be your part in that holding and that raising up? I ask that question of myself.
