Gather Me

A song about our spiritual journey and the gathering in community

Music by Pat Mayberry
Words by Pat Mayberry
Tune Name: GATHER ME

Lyrics as Poetry

I listened for the Word of God
in fire and wind and rain.
I leaned into the edge of dawn
to find the truth again.
I breathed into each moment,
I wakened every dream.
Holy Spirit come and gather me.

Gather me into Light and into Love.
Gather me.
Let the songs of Life be sung.
Come Holy Spirit and gather me.

I called out for the Love of God
to save me from my pain,
I sheltered in the darkest nights
to bring me hope again.
I climbed up every mountain,
I battled storm and sea.
Holy Spirit come and gather me.

Gather me into Light and into Love.
Gather me.
Let the songs of Life be sung.
Come Holy Spirit and gather me.

I walked upon the fertile soil.
I looked up to the sky.
I followed every sacred star
each sign that passed me by.
I reached my hands to heaven,
that Love might gentle me.
Holy Spirit come and gather me.

Gather me into Light and into Love.
Gather me.
Let the songs of Life be sung.
O come Holy Spirit and gather me.

Presentation Suggestions

While there are references which make this song appropriate for some specific seasons (Epiphany, Pentecost), it is very useful at any time, particularly as an opening or gathering song. Although the verses are written in the first person, this hymn is most enjoyed when sung congregationally.

If there is a choir or vocal ensemble, consider using one of the many vocal arrangements available for all combinations of singers. Another suggestion could be to have the choir or ensemble sing unison verses and the chorus in harmony, or alternatively a different combination of parts on each of the refrains.

If you would like to highlight the individual spiritual journey reflected in the verses, consider that each of the three verses could be sung by a soloist or by different soloists, with everyone singing the refrain. Some “visual” gathering effect could be added by having soloists move together from singing positions at the corners or back of the church for example, on the gathering chorus.

Singing a double refrain after the third verse with higher energy and volume can further enhance the seeking, gathering call.
