As Children of Your Love

"called by the death of one we loved"

Music by Ron Klusmeier
Words by Walter Farquharson

Lyrics as Poetry

As children of your love, O God,
we gather in this place.
Called by the death of one we loved
and needing health and grace.

For life’s good gifts we give you thanks,
our loves we celebrate.
Accept us in this time of pain,
new purpose we await.

To tender love and healing heart,
to Christ our hope we’re drawn.
We find there grows within our souls
strong grace and life’s new dawn.

In life, in death, we’re held in love.
We face no grief alone.
This mystery claims our hearts and minds,
this love through Jesus shown.

In love we hold the time that’s past,
in trusting hope we share.
Each day, each breath, each other here
we hold in God’s own care.

The one who leads the dance of life
still guides us on our way.
Let praise be given the God of love!
Let thanks be sung this day!

Comments About Song

“As Children of Your Love” may be offered as a solo, choir, or congregational selection for funerals and memorial services. This is one of the early pieces which Walter and I created together. It was included on my very first LP recording which was released in 1973 – a resource produced by the [then] United Church Observer. This hymn/song has been used more and more in recent years as people seem to be seeking more personal expressions of grief and loss to be included in services of remembrance for loved ones.

A Reflection by

Very early in my years in ministry I became aware that few things were as much a privilege as being invited to walk with families and friends grieving the death of a person they had loved. Intimate memories were shared. A wondering at the purpose of life and the things in life to which we assigned priority would almost always be part of the conversations shared. There was a need to celebrate lives and parts of life well-lived but also a need to find healing where there had been hurt or misunderstanding. The cohesion and the fracturedness of our human reality was hard to deny.

In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone.

This is good news. We are not alone, we are not abandoned.

Each life is held as in the hands of God, seen as with the eyes of God. Each is treasured.

God’s promise is promise of freedom from the things that imprison us, healing from the diseases that afflict us, forgiveness from the alienations that would seek to define us.

We gather “needing health and grace”.
