When We Have No Words

Tune Name: SILENT PLACE

Lyrics as Poetry
There’s a song we can sing that can lift our hearts,
when we have no words to pray.
There’s a song we can sing in the deepest dark,
when we are weak and afraid.
We can open our selves to the silent place
where the Spirit is breathing within.
Let her gentle cries rise up in grace,
in the quiet our souls start to sing.
There’s a song we can sing that can lift our hearts,
when we have no words to pray.
When we have no words, we can still find ground
in the shadows where silence dwells;
The Spirit’s voice wells up within,
and words don’t matter at all.
Let the silence be our prayer, our song,
when we have nothing to say.
Be still, be still, my heart, my soul,
let the fearfulness give way
to the song that is sung in the deepest dark,
when we have no words to pray.
Listen, listen, there’s a melody,
that gathers up all our tears,
and bears our longings endlessly
when all the words disappear;
The Spirit sings in the deepest dark,
when we have no words to pray.
The Spirit sings in the deepest dark,
when we have no words to pray.

GORDON LIGHT
Each of us has moments when prayer feels impossible. Whether it is our sense of being alone, or our inability to deal with grief, or maybe our realization how we have wounded others. There are no words that can underpin or make sense of the moment. Paul tells us that when we can’t find words, our groans are enough. I find that helpful and hopeful. The Spirit moves within to take those groans and make of them a prayer, a song to the Holy One.
