Wake O My Soul

Music by Pat Mayberry
Words by Pat Mayberry
Tune Name: WAKE O MY SOUL

Lyrics as Poetry

Wake O my soul, to earth and sky.
Wake to the forests, fields, the mountains high.
Open my eyes to every rock and tree,
the Holy in all we see.

You the Light of all creation,
Blessed be Your name.
Every seed, every soul Your Love proclaim.

Wake O my soul, to justice and to peace,
Wake to a world where hate and war shall cease.
Where every truth and story is revealed,
the wounds of the past can heal.

You the Light of all creation,
Blessed be Your name.
Every seed, every soul Your Love proclaim.

Wake O my soul, to laughter and to song.
Sing alleluia every doubt be gone.
Stir in our hearts a sacred harmony,
a prayer of community.

You the Light of all creation,
Blessed be Your name.
Every seed, every soul Your Love proclaim.

You the Light of all creation,
Blessed be Your name.
Every seed, every soul Your Love proclaim.

“Wake O My Soul”:

This hymn calls us to wake to the Divine within all things, every rock and tree, every seed and every soul. It calls us to make justice in our world but also to wake to laughter and to song. It is a hymn that can be useful at any time in the church year, but may be particularly suitable for the season of Creation for Earth day or for Justice themed worship services.

Presentation Suggestions

Use Pat’s recording (above) to get the feel for this lovely, moving song. Note that Pat sings it in the key of ‘E’ which suits her vocal range. The versions available here are all based on the key of ‘C’ which will suit most voices.

One of the ways I can imagine the piece being effectively used would be to teach a congregation or group the refrain (“You the Light…”). A soloist or ensemble could sing the verses.

I’d be inclined to gradually add some harmonies on successive refrains until the final one has the maximum fullness depending on available resources. Consider experimenting with the harmony versions found at right. Consider using more than one to provide as much harmonic variety in each of the refrains as possible.
