The Love of God Engages

Music by Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876)
Words by Walter Farquharson
Tune Name: AURELIA (7676 D)
The Love of God Engages

Lyrics as Poetry

The love of God engages;
we cannot stand aside.
The word of God enfleshes,
and in us would reside.
For pity without justice
is empty, hopeless thing.
We’re called to wholesome action
as freedom’s songs we sing.

It’s not enough to pity
when children have no bread,
for faith must work for changes,
create God’s day instead.
The miracles of Jesus
were signs of promise true,
were signs of God’s intention
of heaven and earth made new.

We’re called to see our neighbour,
rejoice with new-found friend,
to work for peace and justice,
see ancient evils end.
“The work of God,” said Jesus,
is now your work to share.
The Spirit will give power
to choose, to will, to dare.”

Presentation Suggestions

The much-loved hymn tune AURELIA is often associated with the the hymn text “The Church’s One Foundation.” Walter’s poetry for “The Love of God Engages” also scans nicely with the AURELIA melody which was written in 1864 by Samuel Sebastian Wesley. At 150+ years old, this accessible hymn tune beautifully supports Walter’s text which was written the day after Christmas, 2023!
